Abuelita's Heart

Synopsis

When the little girl who narrates this story visits her abuelita, her grandmother, she finds a place where everything seems enchanted -- encantada. Father Sun paints the sky and land in glorious colors, and Mother Earth provides bountiful food and healing herbs Everything at Abuelita's is full of life, and Abuelita teaches her granddaughter that she is connected to every living thing; conejo the rabbit, curro the magpie, Abuelita's friendly dog Crystal, and Abuelita herself are all part of one another, a circle of life that goes on forever. The little girl doesn't want this magical visit to end when she must return to the city, and so Abuelita takes her to a very special place -- a cave deep in the countryside filled with her ancestor's cave paintings -- to show her that the bonds of the heart and of family can never be broken. Spanish words and phrases are intertwined with Native American traditions in this loving story about the special connection between a little girl, her grandmother, their ancestors, and the earth around them.
