Independence: Reclaiming Lost Time

This week, our series of entries will continue with brief statements around the theme of independence, as voiced by participants at RFB&D's Access and Achievement Roundtable.

18-year-old Alyssa Lang hails from Jacksonville, Florida. She was diagnosed with dyslexia as a junior in high school after many frustrating years of testing miscues in the education community. Up to that point, she had been struggling to compensate by literally memorizing every word she encountered – a herculean effort that many dyslexics will attest to. After joining RFB&D, Alyssa graduated with a 4.31 GPA and now attends the University of Notre Dame. Here, she remarks on how access to assistive materials has made a major difference in her life.

Independence and a Love for Learning

National Achievement Award winner and long-time RFB&D member Monty Anderson lives in Honolulu and is a student at the University of Hawaii. At 37, he recently finished his double Master's degree in psychology and behavioral neuroscience, and is now a high achiever in law school.

A lifelong music lover, in spare time he also hosts a radio show at KTUH FM Honolulu, dedicated to showcasing original heavy metal artists (“The Only Metal In Hawaii”). We sat down with Monty during the NAA events in Washington earlier this month.

Resonance at the Roundtable

Groundhog Day, 2010: A roomful of people convened within shouting distance of the U.S. Capitol. Their mission: to explore the connections between equal, efficient access to learning resources and superior achievement – not just in the classroom, but in life. Their challenge (in their view, an opportunity): historically low awareness and responsiveness regarding print disabilities in today’s educational system.

Roundtable Spotlights Remarkable Educational Success

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic (RFB&D), which provides the nation’s largest library of educational audio textbooks, will host a unique roundtable on February 2, putting journalists face to face with a Marine Corps veteran and students who have found extraordinary success in school and life – despite their inability to read the printed word.
